Public prosecutors in Italy have urged a court in Milan to jail 26 Americans over their "grave crime" of kidnapping a terrorism suspect in a 2003 CIA operation.
Public prosecutors in Italy have called upon a Milan court to issue the arrest warrant for the CIA agents who participated in a 2003 kidnapping operation, as part of US "renditions" of terrorism suspect authorized by former US administration, which led to the detention and "harsh" interrogation of the Egyptian Muslim cleric Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr, aka Abu Omar.
The Italian lawyers are seeking sentences of between 10 and 13 years for the US agents.
They also want 13 years for the former head of Italy’s secret service, Nicolo Pollari.
The trial is the most high profile case in Europe to challenge the extra-judicial transfers also known as "renditions".
Under renditions program, the US spy agency relocated suspects to a third country where torture was exercised as an attempt to outsource the afflicting practice, human rights activists say.
It centres on the abduction of the Muslim Cleric Abu Omar, who was snatched off the streets of Milan in 2003 and secretly flown to Egypt for interrogation.
He says he was tortured and held until 2007 without charge.
The US government has refrained to extradite the accused American "criminals" to Italy in order for them to give evidence on Abu Omar case.
None of them are at the trial.
The last Bush administration admitted using Rendition as part of its so called "War on Terror".
Armando Spataro, a leading prosecutor on the case has also accused Italian governments of failing to formally request the extradition of the US spies and said that the presence of the American "fugitives" was necessary in order to provide more testimonies for CIA’s international undercover activities.

it would be remarkable if it was the italians who stood up to them.
a conviction and arrest warrant would certainly hurt the bully USA even if the jackals are apprehended.
all it takes is for one person to take the bully down and others will join to insure he bullies no more.
its a brave thing for that prosecutor to do. i hope all of italy is behind him.
at least half of the USA supports him.
we have no heros here. just cartoons. the comic book ones, like batman or wonderwoman. superman remains committed to "Truth and Justice" but isnt with the "American Way" any more.
we have no role models to direct our children to that are real people. our society problems are rampant as every remedy is conflicted with the examples of our goverment's inhumane actions and blatant lying.
we can barely discuss politics among ourselves here any more because so many are furious toward others that accepted the bush lies; those that accepted the lies are either relying on absurd bigger lies that cannot be debated and; those that were sure obama would "change" all this are still hoping, too embarrassed to be openly angry to admit he is more of the same, different flavor.
